Cliftondale FC

A pre-war picture of some of the players and officials of Luton's Cliftondale FC. It was carried in the Beds & Herts Saturday Telegraph of September 9th, 1916, to record that all of these 13 players and officials shown were engaged either in munitions work or had enlisted in the Army or Navy.

Top row, left to right (as named), were trainer T. Hawkins (munitions), full-back W. Read (munitions), right-back S. Dimmock (Beds Regiment in France), secretary G. Wise (passed for Labour Units).

Middle row: Left-half G. Smith (Beds Regiment, suffering from dysentery), outside-left S. Barton (Middlesex Regiment), right-half P. Hooker (Royal Navy).

Bottom row: Outside-right A. Wise (Northamptonshire Regiment), inside-right R. Gee (Queen's Royal West Surrey Regiment), centre-forward S. Manton (Beds Regiment now in France), inside-left H. Allen (Middlesex Regiment), outside-right G. Fensome (Royal Engineers).

Other team members serving but not in the photograph were right-half P. Eloden (Beds Regiment, wounded), right-back A. Smith (Beds Regiment, killed in action), centre-half Sid Soper (Middlesex Regiment, late Kenilworth Rangers), left-half G. Adams (Beds Regiment, suffering from dysentery), half-back C. Halfpenny (R.F.A. in Ireland).
