Serving the King

In the initial stages of the war, the local newspapers were engaged in publishing endless lists of the names of men who had enlisted into the armed forces. This was probably to envoke pride in those who had joined up, but also to provoke shame in those who had not yet signed up for war.

Field Ambulance at full strength

A few days ago it was announced that the Eastern Mounted Brigade Field Ambulance, which has its headquarters in Grove Road, Luton, had vacancies for 22 well-educated men for water duties with the various units composing the Eastern Mounted Brigade, which is at present at its war station somewhere in East Anglia.

These men have already been obtained and once again the Field Ambulance, as well as the new reserve unit formed since the commencement of the war, is in a position to state that no more recruits are required.

Water duty men look after the water supply of a unit, clarify and make it fit for drinking whe nsuch a process is necessary, and assist the medical officer of the regiment in his work. It is necessary, therefore, that they shall be men possessed of a certain amount of initiative, and able to deal with matters of importance when the medical officer is not available. The work carries a fair pay when men are returned as efficient, and of the 22 six can be corporals.

The names of the recruits are:

Anderson B.

Cullins A.

Davis J. R.

Ephgrave A.

Ford A. P.

Frost A. J.

Godfrey H.

Goodman S.

Hale S.

Hollinshead W.

Odell B. J.

Smith H. G.

Whittemore H. J.

Wiles F.

Worboys A.

The reserve unit, the training of which is being carried on in Luton, is gradually getting clothed. Boots for all the men have arrived, and the clothing is expected in a few days. Medical stores, however, are likely to be much longer in arriving.

Training is going on as usual. The only difference which has been made is that the men now turn out at 6.30 instead of 6 am, the same number of hours per day being put in.

A voluntary Swedish drill class in held in the evenings. A sports club has been started, the equipment including boxing gloves, a punch ball, footballs etc. The footballers have done exceedingly well. They have won one match by 10 goals to one, and on Saturday the second team beat a team representing the Divisional Brigade Field Ambulance by six goals to one.

Of the 2nd Field Company East Anglian Divisional Royal Engineers, one of Luton's contributions to the Territorial Force, 98 per cent have volunteered for foreign service.

Steps have been taken during the last few days to enrol a new unit, and on Tuesday we were informed at the Engineers' headquarters in Napier Road, Luton, that the new unit had already been completed and many names put on a waiting list. Of the new unit, 90 per cent have volunteered for foreign service. At present they will be trained at Luton, and they are doing physical exercises and company drill daily in a field off Milton Road.

September 17th Recruits (Field Ambulance)

Recruiting was started in Luton last week for a new Eastern Mounted Brigade Field Ambulance unit to take the place of the present unit with the Field Army should the first? unit leave for foreign service, for which they have volunteered.

The new unit has now been completed with very little trouble, and volunteering for foreign service has been the general rule. The majority of the new recruits came from Luton, but there are some from Bedford and just a few from St Neots and Kimbolton.

Old hands have readily rejoined and the new men are of a stamp which will not take long to get into shape. Their training will take place at Luton for some time, and already some of them are falling into their drills very well.

As they are billeted at home they get a special ration allowance of 2s per day. Lieut Sharp has been in charge of the headquarters at Grove Road during the recruiting, and the names of the recruits are:

September 17th Recruits (Via Park Street Recruiting Depot)

Following is the list of the men who have enlisted since August 10th at the Luton Park Street recruiting depot in various units of the Regular Army and the Special Reserve (which takes the place of the old Militia). This list must not be taken as giving anything like the names of all the men who have joined these particular branches of the service from Luton and district, because many have gone to Bedford direct.

In several instance big batches of men have been conveyed by public-spirited owners of motor vehicles from the works where the men were employed to Bedford. Therefore they would not pass through the Park Street depot at all.

The men mentioned below come from the country districts around Luton as well as from the town, and in some instances from further afield than that. One of the men who enlisted had walked from London.

The recruiting officer at Park Street is Capt G.A. Bulkley.
