My first cousin twice removed (his father, John Barrett, was a brother of my great-grandmother), Ernest Ethelred Barrett had been a house-painter at the time of the 1911 census of Luton, aged 16, living in the family home at 53 Hibbert Street. He enlisted on 9 September 1914 into the Royal Engineers, as a Sapper, (Army No. 1515) and was posted to E.A. Division RE. He later became a Driver, (Army No. 524183) and served throughout the Great War. Prior to his demobilisation in April 1919, he was described by his Unit, HQ 54 Divn., RE, (on Army Form W.3226) as an Officer's Servant, and "an excellent cook". He had married Violet Sharp on 3 April 1915, and moved to live at 5 Windmill Street, Luton (since renamed Welbeck Road). It was from that address that he wrote to the Army in March 1921 to enquire about an award of the 1914/15 Star, "which all men of my unit have received"; it is not known if he was awarded this medal. He died in Luton on 7 September 1959, aged 65.
