Private Henry George Smith

Private Henry George Smith, was the son of Sidney and Susan Smith of Bedfordshire. Sidney was General foreman to Luton Borough Council, and Henry was a bricklayer.

His war service saw him serve with the Bedfordshire Regiment as a Private, and later he served with the Medical Corps in Egypt. At one point during the war he was upset because wasn’t allowed home to attend funeral of his mother. This serves as a remineder of how desperate the war was, or simply how difficult it was to transfer a soldier in and out on short notice, in among the other realities of planning and fighting the war.

Henry survived the war and married Annie Clark of Luton, in Ellacomb (Devon) on the 16th Jun 1929.

He died on the 26th November 1965 in Luton.
