Pte Gerald Sidney Brunton. 25529, 2nd Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment, was killed in action on the Somme on July 30th, 1916. He was aged 21 and single.

Born near Fakenham, Norfolk, in 1895, he was the son of Frederick William and Martha Elizabeth Brunton. Gerald was one of 12 children, 11 still living at the time of the 1911 Census, when the family were living at Wisbech, Cambridgeshire. He was then working as a farm labourer.

Pte Aubrey Stanbridge, 27467, 1st Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment, attached to the 10th Worcesters, was killed in action on the Somme on July 23rd, 1916.

Born in Luton in 1877, his birth registration shows his full name as Haydn Aubrey Stanbridge. He was the son of the late Frank Shapcott Stanbridge (died 1907, aged 54) and Caroline Stanbridge (died 1913, aged 60). His last known address was 77 Wellington Street, Luton, where his mother lived until her death.

Pte Ernest George Foord, 27058, 1st Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment attached to the 10th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment, was killed in action on July 22nd, 1916, after serving only three weeks on the Somme. He was aged 29.

Sgt William Phypers, 2057, 12th Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment, died in a casualty clearing station in France on July 17th, 1916, after being severely wounded on June 29th and lying unattended in No Man's Land between the trenches for a whole day before being picked up. The spell of exposure was reported to be ultimately the cause cause of his death.

Pte William Fensome, 18837, Machine Gun Corps, and formerly with the Essex Regiment (9882), was killed in action on July 1st, 1916, in the "Big Push" at the start of the Battle of the Somme.

Military records show him to have been the son of widower Mr Thomas Fensome, of 5 Ebenezer Street, Luton, and give his age as 28. The Ebenezer Street address is included on the Luton Roll of Honour.

Pte Frank Gates, 13335, 7th Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment, was killed in action in the "Big Push" on the Somme on July 1st, 1916. He was aged 23.

The son of the late Benjamin (died 1908) and Elizabeth Rose Gates, of 82 Burr Street, Luton, he was before the war employed by George Kent's Ltd and was a regular attendant at the Wesleyan Central Mission Brotherhood. He enlisted with the Colours at the outbreak of war.

Frederick Marlow was 1 of 9 children born to Frederick & Emma in Sundon Bedfordshire in 1897.

In 1911 he is 14 years old & working with his 43 year old father as farm labourers. His is living with his family in Sundon. His brother Arthur is 16 years old & working as a truck driver & his eldest brother George is 18 & working as a chalk digger in a lime works. Horace aged 10 & 8 year old Ivy Sarah are at school whilst their 44 year old mother is at home looking after 2 year old Doris & 3 week old Evelyn (Cissie).

Pte George Hermon Hart, 2899, 1/24th County of London Regiment (The Queen's), was killed in action in France on May 24th, 1916. He had recently celebrated his 21st birthday while in the trenches.

He was the son of bleacher and dyer Mr Baxter Herbert Hart and his wife Emily Agnes, of 'Homah,' 75 New Bedford Road, Luton. At the outbreak of war he was employed as a warehouse assistant by hat manufacturers Messrs F. J. Elliott in Guildford Street, Luton. He also played half-back for Luton Casuals FC.

Albert Edward Holdstock was born in Luton in 1896.

In 1911 he is 15 years old & working as a manufacturer's assistant. He is living with his family at No 20 Stanley Street. His father Samuel is 43 & working as a labourer for a timber merchants, his mother Lizzie also 43, is a straw hat machinist & his younger brother Hedley is 13 and at school.

Hedley William Holdstock was born in Luton in April 1898.

In 1911 he is a 13 year old school boy & living with his family at No 20 Stanley Street. His father Samuel is 43 & working as a labourer for a timber merchants, his mother Lizzie also 43, is a straw hat machinist & Albert Edward, Hedley's 15 year old brother is a manufacturer's assistant.

Pte Charles Ellingham, 22462, 8th Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment, was killed in action near Ypres on April 19th, 1916.

Born in Luton, he was the youngest but one of six sons of James and Susan Ellingham, of 26 Spring Place, Luton. For some years before the war he was employed by J. Custance and Sons, sugar boilers, at 15 Chapel Street.

Pte Ellingham had been at the Front for just nine weeks. On the day of his death there had been a very severe bombardment by the enemy that was one of the worst so far experienced and lasted eight hours.

Cpl Reginald Sydney Buckingham, 17597, 1st Battalion Oxford and Buck Light Infantry, was killed in action while serving in the Persian Gulf on April 6th, 1916. He was aged 22.

The son of Levi and Lily Buckingham, he was born in Tebworth in 1894, and in 1901 was living at 31 Stuart Street, Luton. In April 1914 he married Priscilla Ann Pateman and had a son, Aubrey Reginald, with whom he lived at Dorset Villa, Marsh Road, Leagrave.

Rifleman Augustus Tennyson Bruton, C/1611, 16th Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps, died at the Lord Derby War Hospital, Warrington, Lancs, on April 10th, 1916, from wounds accidentally sustained during bomb-throwing training in France. He was aged 21.

He joined the Forces in November 1915 and was sent for training. On February 1st, without having had any leave, he went to France. Parents Alfred John and Sarah Jane Bruton, of East Hyde Mill Cottages, New Mill End, never saw their son in uniform.

Christopher Angus Cunningham was born in Luton in 1889, 1 of 4 children born to John Christopher & Clara.

In 1901 aged 12 years old he is living with his family at no 16 Gladstone Avenue.

His father John Christopher is 39 & a travelling drapery & clothing retailer, his mother Clara is 40 & at home looking after Christopher Angus & his siblings, 9 year old Margaret Eva, 8 year old Alice Jean, 6 year old John Crawford & Ronald who is 1.

In 1911 Christopher is living with his family at No 10 Westbourne Road, Luton.

William James Cowley was born in Rawtenstall, Lancashire in 1893

In 1911 aged 18 he is working as a clerk & junior warehouseman at a straw & felt hat manufactures along his father & living with his family at No 61 Brook Street, Luton.
