Pte Ernest George Foord, 27058, 1st Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment attached to the 10th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment, was killed in action on July 22nd, 1916, after serving only three weeks on the Somme. He was aged 29.

L-Cpl Frederick Horace Goodwin, 19854, 8th Battalion Beds Regiment, was one of a number of soldiers with Luton connections killed in action in Flanders on April 19th, 1916.

Born in Ampthill in 1893, he was the eldest son of William and Phoebe Goodwin, of Pulloxhill. Before enlistment, Frederick worked in the Great Northern Railway goods shed at Luton. He continued to live in Pulloxhill and cycled to and from his work in Luton each morning and evening. Previously he had been a farm labourer.

Company Sgt-Major Herbert William Sexton, 935, 1/2nd East Anglian Field Company, Royal Engineers, died of enteric fever on October 30th, 1915, while serving with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force. He was aged 21 and was buried at Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta.

Prior to the war he had been Booking Clerk at the Great Northern Railway station in Bute Street, Luton. His father James was a railway signalman living at Knebworth, Herts, with Elizabeth. Herbert was one of their 10 children.
