This section contains lists of the casualties, wounded, missing or killed in action, and makes grim reading...The lists were published weekly in local newspapers throughout the country, and form a tragic picture of the cost of war.
Stories about individual casualties of war had already begun to be published in The Luton News. But by October 29th, 1914, a first Roll of Honour was printed. This was by no means up to date as information from the front could take weeks to arrive but it was the best available information the newspaper had at that time. Sadly it would be added to at future dates and the updated lists published periodically.
The list includes men from throughout the newspaper's circulation area, which included Dunstable and villages in South Beds and Mid Beds.
ANSELL - Charles: Beechwood Road, Leagrave, missing from HMS Aboukir, sunk in the North Sea, September 22nd*.
CLARKE - James: 5 Tavistock Street, Dunstable, missing from HMS Hogue, sunk in the North Sea, Sept 22nd*.

HOLMES - Pte Albert W. (Royal Fusiliers): Late of Cranford, Middlesex, grandson of the late Mr Samuel Brewer, of Toddington, and nephew of Mr and Mrs James Tilcock, also of Toddington, died of wounds received in action in France, September 23rd.
JONES - John C.: Formerly of Dunstable, assistant paymaster, HMS Hawke, sunk by a German submarine in the North Sea, Oct 15th, included in list of missing.

PINNOCK - Percy James: 29 Boyle Street, Luton, missing from HMS Amphion, sunk in the North Sea by a German mine, August 6th.

STOKES - Pte George (R.M.L.I): Son of Mr William Stokes, 4 Front Row, New Town Street, Luton, missing from HMS Amphion, sunk in the North Sea, August 6th.
WEEDON - Pte 14903 Horace (No 1 Company, Grenadier Guards): 53 Wimbourne Road, Luton, killed in action in France, September 14th.
[* Date now known to be September 22nd and amended above accordingly, although the original printed list said September 24th.]
The latest casualty list shows that the Bedfordshire Regiment has suffered severely. Of the list on non-commissioned officers and men reported in the list as killed, wounded or missing, by far the greater proportion belonged to our county regiment, and even then the list only gives the casualties up to September 9th. The men of the Bedfordshire who have laid down their lives in the service of their country, or have been wounded, or becoming "missing" are:

[The Luton News, October 1st, 1914]
In the October 6th casualty list Driver Percy Snoxell, of the 68th Battery, Royal Field Artillery, is given as "wounded and missing".
Driver Snoxell is the eldest son of Mr Alfred Snoxell, of 84 Grange Road, Luton, and is well known in local football circles, having played for the Granville FC. He was in his last year of service. The official information sent to Mr Snoxell does not state when or where his son was wounded. Mr Snoxell has two other sons serving the King - one in the R.A.M.C. and one in the Territorials.
[The name of Driver Percy Glifford Snoxell 59028, single, is recorded on the Luton War Memorial Roll of Honour.]
Private Albert John Clarke, of the Royal Army Medical Corps (Aldershot), son of Mrs R. Clarke, of 2 Queen Street, Luton, is at present in the 1st General Hospital, Birmingham, suffering from a wound received in the Battle of Mons. He was attending a wounded comrade when a shell burst quite close to him and he was wounded in the left leg.

[Saturday Telegraph, March 27th, 1915]
Fifty-seven men of the 8th Bedfordshire Regiment, including four from Luton and one from Sundon, were killed when the Germans made a successful attack on British front line trenches near Ypres on April 19th, 1916.
However, after paying a visit of the Battalion Headquarters at the Front, the Divisional General congratulated the Commanding Officer on the battalion's coolness and steadiness in action under a most fierce bombardment lasting eight hours. From information obtained from German prisoners, it had been discovered that 1,000 enemy troops were launched to attack immediately after the bombardment. The Germans stated that they had taken about 37 prisoners.
The General Officer left a message to the effect that he wished all ranks "to be informed that the Division are proud to have such a splendid Battalion serving with them as the 8th Bedfordshire Regiment has proved itself during the operations of the past few days, in withstanding after heavy artillery bombardment an attack with the odds against them".
The Luton men killed were Pte Charles Ellingham, Pte William Ernest Gore, Pte Frederick Thomas Sharp and Pte John Alfred Marlow, who was listed as missing at the time with the possibility that he had been taken prisoner.
From Sundon, Pte Albert George Cox was among those listed killed in action. And L-Cpl Frederick Horace Goodwin, who worked for the Great Northern Railway in Luton but lived at Pulloxhill, was also killed.
Stories have come to hand of how young Lutonians have won fame in a great charge. But there are sad tidings for some homes, one or two names being among the list of killed and others wounded.
All of the young fellows enlisted last September in the 24th County of London Regiment ("The Queen's"). On their departure the above picture appeared in The Luton News.
Whilst the regiment was in the trenches [north of Givenchy] there was an order to charge. Out of the trenches leapt out Luton boys, and while their brave dash has won fame for the regiment to which they belonged, yet Luton is proud to know that a very considerable portion of its young manhood led the way in as fine display of courage as will ever be read of. But at what cost were the German trenches taken!
The young Lutonians suffered badly, but those left rejoice in the fact that they unflinchingly stuck to it and gained the objective aimed at.
On May 26th, 1915, Sir John French sent the following despatch: "A Territorial Division carried last night a group of German trenches, capturing 35 prisoners, and this morning it captured one officer, 21 men and a machine gun.
"Since May 16th the First Army has pierced the enemy's line on a total front of over three miles. Of this the entire hostile front line system of trenches has been captured on a front of 3,200 yards, and of the remaining portion the first and second line of trenches are in our possession.
"The total number of prisoners taken is eight officers and 777 other ranks. Ten machine guns in all have fallen into out possession, as well as a considerable quantity of material and equipment, particulars of which are not yet available."
Another reported stated that the "Queen's" stormed a German trench which had been attacked three times previously and unsuccessfully. The battalion of the old "Queen's" not only took it but held it, despite repeated attacks made by the Germans to regain it.
The heavy list of Lutonians and men with Luton connections on the casualty lists included:
