Killed - Bedfordshire Regt - 12250 R. Franklin (Luton). This brief mention on a War Office casualty list appears to have been all that was reported in Luton on the death of Pte Reginald John Franklin, 6th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment, on June 30th, 1916.

The Luton Roll of honour provides the address of 45a Windsor Street, Luton, where, according to a 1915 street directory, his mother Mary was living. Reginald was her eldest son, born at Carlton, near Harrold, Beds, late in 1886 and he was described as a ploughboy in the 1901 Census. His ploughman father John had died in 1904 at the age of 39.

The Beds Times said Reginald was the fourth soldier from Carlton to die in action. One of the others was a cousin, and another a cousin by marriage.
