Do you want to add something? Here's a few tips.

This site is about splitting information up into chunks that can be used for research, to tell stories, and to build a bigger picture of Luton's war. But if you just want to talk about your family memories of WWI, and are not quite sure where to start or what to do. I hope this little guide helps.

Does your story involve a person?

  • Add them as a person
  • find out as much as you can about them.
  • Upload the information, and save it.
  • Don't worry about completing all the boxes when you first add someone, you can edit and add later.

Does it involve something that happened at a point in time? e.g. March 1916

  • A battle, an event in town like a parade, a concert for wounded soldiers, a letter than mentions a march between two towns.
  • Add it as an Event
  • Found out when the event was
  • Found out where it was
  • Complete the boxes as best you can on the add event screen.
  • Again, don't worry about filling them all in at once. You can come back and edit as you find out more.

Does it involve an object/place?

  • Something that just is...Is an object. A bullet, a hat, a shell, a bank, a church, a train station
  • Add it as an Object or Place
  • Found out as much as you can about it
  • Found out where it is (could be in your attic, could be in the High Street)
  • If the object is valuable e.g. a Victoria Cross, then locate the item on your street, not your house!
  • Again, you don't need to complete all the boxes, you can always come back and add more later.

I just don't know where my story/information should go!

  • Add it to the forum.
  • The project team will discuss with you if the information can be investigated further and perhaps added later as a Person/Event/Object.
  • Other people can join in and discuss with you if they know more about it

Tips

  • Always try to link your entry to something else e.g. Your soldier ancestor fought at the Somme, ensure his story is linked to The Battle of the Somme via the Add Person button.
  • The more links we make on this site, the more complete the story would be.
  • If you are really stuck. Ask questions on the forum...We're here to help.
