Yet another Luton lad has won the encomium of his officer for bravery in the field. At Felixstowe, L-Cpl Cyril Wilkinson, 10715, A Company, 2nd Battalion Beds Regiment, is recuperating from wounds received at the end of September.
A few days ago he was called into the field where the reserves of the Beds Regiment are training, and Lord Ampthill, the commanding officer, read the following tribute to the bravery of this Luton lad:
The Bedfordshire Regiment, 2nd Battalion - 10715 Pte Wilkinson C. has been brought to the notice of the Officer Commanding of the battalion for his good work in the field. On the night of 29/30 September, 1915, he was cut off from the rest of the company with six other men. They fought their way back to the main trench, and by their splendid work prevented the enemy from working along our trenches - H. F. Bidder, Major Commanding 2nd Battalion, the Bedfordshire Regiment.
This gives the story of L-Cpl Wilkinson's wounds. He was damaged while fighting in the trenches but is now recovering.
The son of Mrs Wilkinson, of 29 Butlin Road, Luton, he is not strictly entited to serve on battlefields abroad, for he does not attain his 18th birthday until New Year's Day. He is a fine fellow, however, standing about six feet high and tipping the beam at upwards of 160 lb. He worked at the Cocoa Factory prior to enlistment.
