The story behind the Wardown gun captured by the Bedfordshire Regiment in Gaza was not as straightforward as stated on a plaque at the unveiling ceremony in September 1920.
The plaque bore the inscription: "Presented to the town of Luton by the 1/5th Batt, Bedfordshire Regt. This gun was taken by the Battalion at Gaza, 1918."
Ex-servicemen had disputed the date, claiming that the gun was in fact captured in November 1917 and that there was no fighting in Gaza in 1918.
Ten years later, Lieut Col Edgar Brighten, commander of the 5th Bedfords, writing from India, said the gun was indeed captured in 1917 but allotted to the 1/5th Bedfords in 1918. He suggested the inscription should be corrected.
In the meantime a picture of the capture of the gun, as taken by Col John Brown, 162nd (East Midland) Infantry Brigade, was published in the Tuesday Pictorial in October 1925.
The original blog, based on 1920 reports, has now been updated, including the addition of Col Brown's photo.
