Christopher Shepheard was born on 22nd April 1892 in Luton, 1 of 10 children born to Sydney & Ellen.
In 1911 Christopher is 18 years old & working with his twin brother Harold as a warehouseman within the straw hat trade & living at 14 Rothesay Road with his family. His 63 year old father Sydney is a house painter, his brother John Sidney, 40 is a self employed straw hat manufacturer alongside his 36 year old sister Hellen Eliza, Lilley Louisa, 38 is a straw hat finisher & 29 year old George Henry is a carpenter & joiner.
In March 1916 Christopher enlisted into the 6th battalion Leicester Regiment. His service record describes him as 5ft 6 inches tall with a fair complexion, grey eyes & light brown hair & having a good, sober, trustworthy & honest character.
Christopher was posted to France on 10th December 1916 but 3 months later on 18th March 1917 he was severly wounded. It was whilst standing in the trenches in Vermielle, France that he was shot by a machine gun bullet through the chest & 7th vertebra, injuring his spinal cord. On 6th April 1917 he was sent home to England & on 24th September 1917 was discharged from the Army as permanently disabled.
Christopher survived the war but sadly died of his wounds on 11th August 1919. He is buried in the cemetery on Rothesay Road.
