Pte Cyril Long, 52254, 1st Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, was killed in action in France on September 29th, 1918. He was aged 19 and single.
Cyril had been an apprentice working for the Luton News before joining up with the Herts Yeomanry (No. 3210) on his 18th birthday. Later he was transferred to the Lincoln Cyclists Corps and came home on draft leave in August 1918.
On August 24th he was again transferred, and crossed the Channel with the Lincolnshire Regiment. After a few days at the front he wrote to parents Leonard and Gertrude Long at 100 Wellington Street, Luton, to tell them, among other things, of the number of prisoners captured by the British troops.
When nothing further was heard from Cyril, his father telegraphed his regimental headquarters for news. On October 18th a telegram arrived stating that his son was reported killed in France on September 29th, followed by confirmation from the War Office.
Cyril was born in Bristol in 1899 and came to Luton with his family after 1901.
