Frank Hull was born in Sundon on October 23rd, 1895. He was 1 of 12 children born to John & Ann.
In 1911 Frank is 15 & working as a farm labourer for Mr F Ward. He is living in Upper Sundon with his parents & 2 brothers. His father John is 67 years old & a farm labourer for Mr W Cooper, his mother Ann is 58 & a straw worker. George is 22 years old & working as a general labourer at Forder's cement works & Henry, 30 is a farm labourer for Mr Hucklesby.
In January 1916 Frank joined the 2/7th Battalion Sherwood Foresters in Nottingham. Prior to enlistment he had been employed on the railway at Long Eaton, Notts, and travelled to Watford for his basic training. Expecting to be posted to France & Flanders to fight in the Great War, the battalion was sent to Dublin, Ireland to suppress the Easter Rising.
The Easter Rising was so called because a group on Irish Nationalists along with 1,600 followers staged a rebellion on Easter Monday 24th April 1916 to end British rule in Ireland and establish an independent republic, taking advantage of the fact that the United Kingdom was heavily engaged in the War.
Over 2,000 people were killed or injured within that week of fighting. The British Troops had suppressed the rebellion & the leaders were soon executed but in 1921 a treaty was signed & a year later the Irish Free State was established, which eventually became the modern-day Republic of Ireland.
Frank was wounded in the arm during the conflict in Ireland but in February 1917 he was transferred to Le Havre to go to the western front, where he took part in some prominent battles including Arras, Vimy Ridge & Ypres.
He was taken as a prisoner of war at Bullecourt in France on March 21st, 1918, and interned at Parchim in Germany. He returned to England where he was demobilised in December 1919.He had married Grace Richardson and they lived in Colin Road, Luton, after the war until Frank's death in 1958 at the age of 63.
