Pte Frederick George Fleckney, 14538, 9th Royal West Surrey Regiment, was killed in action in France on March 21st, 1918, at the opening of the German spring offensive.

Born on August 11th, 1895, he was the son of the late George (died 1915) and Hannah (died 1906) Fleckney, of Mangrove Green, and he had been living with his married sister Elizabeth Henman at Mangrove, near Luton.

Pte Fleckney joined up on March 9th, 1915. On first going to France he was in a machine gun section and later transferred to the West Surreys. Elder brother, Pte Sidney Thomas Fleckney, had been killed on the Western Front in June 1916.

Prior to joining up, Frederick Fleckney was employed by bleacher and dyer George Carruthers, of Park Street.

A memorial service for Frederick was held at St Hugh's Church, Cockernhoe, where he was a former chorister. Both brothers are commemorated on the Offley War Memorial.
