Hedley William Holdstock was born in Luton in April 1898.
In 1911 he is a 13 year old school boy & living with his family at No 20 Stanley Street. His father Samuel is 43 & working as a labourer for a timber merchants, his mother Lizzie also 43, is a straw hat machinist & Albert Edward, Hedley's 15 year old brother is a manufacturer's assistant.
In June 1916 Hedley enlisted into The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment), 16th Labour Company, Home Service Battalion. He is described as 5ft 8 inches tall & working as a engineer's clerk.
On 27th February 1917 he was transferred to the 124th Labour Company. He was posted to France where the company was involved in the construction of roads & trenches.
Hedley survived the war.
He died on 20th April 1920 & is buried in the Rothesay Road cemetery.
