Pte Herbert Bysouth

Pte Herbert Bysouth, 201034, 1/5th Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment, was killed in action in the 3rd Battle of Gaza on November 2nd, 1917. He was aged 26.

He had enlisted in the Beds Regiment in November 1915 and served in Egypt. Prior to joining up he was an employee of the Luton Co-operative Society.

The son of William and Edith Bysouth, of 7 High Street, Luton [a road linking Midland Road with Ashton Street that later became the former Gillam Street], Herbert married Eva Annie Walters in Luton in 1916. At the time of Herbert's death, Eva was living at 123 Russell Street, Luton, with Beatrice, the wife of Herbert's brother, Pte Fred Bysouth, who had been killed in action in Palestine on July 20th, 1917.

Eva remarried in September 1919, her new husband being William Frederick Gladman.
