Pte Sydney George Bright, 3/7100 1st Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment, was killed in action at Hill 60 in Flanders on April 18th, 1915. He was aged 20.
Born at Turners End, Toddington, he lived with his parents Mr E. and Mrs M. Bright in Chalton. He was well known in the Luton district as a telegraph boy. He had been a pupil of Toddington National School/St George's Church of England Lower.
A reservist of the 3rd Beds, he did his month's training in June 1914 and about a week later bought his discharge on account of his occupation. When war was declared he received orders on August 8th to report to Bedford to rejoin his old regiment. On completion of training in England he was drafted with the 3rd Beds to France, where he was transferred to the 1st Battalion, A Company.
After being in the trenches on several occasions he contracted rheumatism due to exposure, and was for some time an inmate of the hospital at Rouen. On his recovery he rejoined the 1st Battalion in the trenches and, as one of his friends later said, "died a noble death" on April 18th.
