The National Roll (mostly submitted by families) describes his service as follows: Volunteering in August 1915 he was drafted to France before the close of the year and did excellent work in several sectors. In the course of his overseas service he was present at several battles including those of Ypres, St Quentin, Armientieres, Cambrai and the Somme and on the termination of the war he returned to England. He was demobilised in March 1919 and holds the 1914-15 Star and the General Service and Victory Medals.
