Pte Arthur Fitzjohn, 025045, 96th Company Army Ordnance Corps, died in the Cambridge Military Hospital, Aldershot, on July 11th, 1917, after several months of ill health. He was aged 31.

Born and bred in St Albans, he joined the Army Ordnance Corps in November 1916 and after that was never in good health. He was first taken suddenly ill while on leave at Luton, and he was treated first in the Bute Hospital and then at Wardown. After that he contracted further illness and died on July 11th in Aldershot.

He left a widow, Louise (nee Ellingham), whom he had married at Wellington Street Baptist Church, Luton, on June 1st, 1914. They had a baby daughter, Muriel, born in 1916. Louise was living with her parents, Albert and Jane Ellingham, at 222 Wellington Street, Luton.

A funeral of a "semi-military character" took place at the General Cemetery, Rothesay Road, Luton, on July 16th, 1917.

Arthur, described in the 1911 Census as manager of a boot manufacturing company, was a member of the Luton branch of the Shops Assistants' Union. He was on the roll of honour of Wellington Street Baptist Church, with which he was connected through Christian Endeavour. The Ellingham family were also members of the church.
