An example of an honourable discharge certificate issued to disabled soldiers who had served in the Great War. It is among the WW1 items held at Wardown House Museum.

The recipient in this case was Pte John William Dolling, 9356, The Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment). He had been discharged in April 1919 suffering from rheumatism and sciatica.

Born in Ampthill in 1893, he had joined the Army Reserve in 1910 and was called up for war service on August 8th, 1914. He served the Beds Regiment and Essex Regiment before being transferred to the Royal West Kents.

On July 29th, 1912, he had married Edith Maud Harris at Christ Church, Luton, and they had a son, Alfred John William, born a year later. The couple lived at 34 Grange Road [now St Peter's Road], Luton, and later at 42 Stratford Road, where John was residing until his death on June 13th, 1937, at the age of 44. He had worked in the hat trade.
