The National Roll (mostly submitted by families) describes his service as follows: Serving in the Royal navy on the outbreak of hostilities aboard HMS Amazon his ship was engaged during the war on important submarine patrol duties in the North Sea and was in action in the battle of Jutland and in the Naval raid on Zeebrugge. He holds the 1914 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals and in 1920 was still serving.
