Driver Arthur Smith

 

Driver Arthur Smith, 524236, 1/2nd East Anglian Division Royal Engineers, died suffering from pneumonia in the Government Hospital in Suez, Egypt, on August 28th, 1916.

It was just the day before that parents Joseph and Jane Smith, of 58 New Town Street, Luton, learned that Arthur was dangerously ill in hospital. He was the second of their sons to die during the war.

Private Cyril Snoxell

 

Pte Cyril Snoxell, 11370, 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment), died of pneumonia at the 6th Stationary Hospital, Le Havre in France, on March 23rd, 1916. He was aged 23.

He was the son of William and Susan Snoxell, of 31 Chase Street, Luton, and shortly before his death had been home on leave.

Pte Snoxell, who would have been in the Sherwoods for six years in June 1916, was stationed in India when war broke out. His battalion was ordered home and immediately went to France, where Pte Snoxell took part in many engagements.

Private William George Ibbett

 

Pte William George Ibbett, 3073, 1/5th Bedfords, died of pneumonia on board the hospital ship Guildford Castle and was buried at sea on September 23rd, 1915. He was aged 18.

Christened George William Ibbett, he had switched his first names when he enlisted to avoid confusion with a comrade with exactly the same name. He was the eldest son of bricklayer John Thomas and Susan Ibbett, of 6 Warwick Road, Luton. The family had moved from Wollaston, Northamptonshire, their two youngest children, aged eight and five, having been born in Luton.
