This page contains a list of soldiers/civilians from Luton and surroundings 1914-1918, and the ancestors of people who live in Luton today. It has been compiled from the 1918 Luton Absent Voters List, Rolls of Honour; and information researched and uploaded by project volunteers and members of the public.

Before adding anybody to the site, it is always advisable to search for your ancestor first.

A J Pickering was born in 1896, the son of Charles Pickering of Wing, Oakham in Rutland.

He served in the 2/5th Leicestershire Regiment.

He died on 18th July 1915 & was buried in the cemetery on Crawley Green Road.

 

Richard was born in 1891.

He served in the 8th Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment.

He survived the war but died on 23rd August 1921.

He is buried in the cemetery on Crawley Green Road.

Bert served in the 11th Battalion Suffolk Regiment.

He survived the war but died on 16th July 1920.

E Harman served in the Dispersal Centre in Purfleet in the Royal Air Force.

He survived the war but died on 28th March 1920.

He is buried in the cemetery on Crawley Green Road.

 

 

Gravestone of Cpl William Gurney

 

Cpl William Gurney, 97201, No 8 Depot Company, Royal Engineers, died in the Red Cross Hospital at Newark, Notts, from an acute internal condition. He was taken suddenly ill and died ten hours later.

J Allen was born in 1875.

He was the husband of Lily Allen of 61 Chase Street, Luton.

He served with The Royal Army Service Corps.

He survived the war but died on 10th July 1920.

He is buried in the cemetery on Crawley Green Road.

 

William Henry Shaw was born in 1884.

On 12 April 1909 he married Rosa Ada Fensome.

John Morton Sandford Smith was born in Eltham, Kent in September 1897, the eldest son of Henry Sandford Smith a Medical Practitioner & Ethel Gertrude.

In 1901 he is living with his parents & his 2 older sisters Rose Audrey & Joan Margaret in the High Street, Eltham.

William Ernest Tricker was born in July 1893 in Luton.

At 8 years old in 1901 he has been adopted by Rosa Tricker & is living with her & her daughter Florence aged 6 at 26 Pondwicks Road. Rosa is working as a straw hat machinist from home.

Sidney Ward was 1 of 3 children born to William & Mary in Grantham, Lincolnshire in 1882.

He married Mary Elizabeth Cottam in Nottingham in 1902.

James Webb was born in St Pancras, Middlesex in 1873.

H Davis was born in 1868.

He joined the 57th Protection Company of the Royal Defence Corps & on 29th April 1915 was perfoming railway duties.

He died on 7th February 1917 & was buried in the cemetery on Crawley Gren Road.

Second-Lieut Johnson Hugh Linsell, 1st Battalion Middlesex Regt, was killed in action leading his platoon against German trenches in the battle of Loos on September 25th, 1915. He was aged 20.

Pte Harry Gillman

 

Pte Harry Gillman, 19065, 2nd Battalion Beds Regt, was killed in action at the battle of Loos in France on September 27th*, 1915. He was aged 25.

Pte Arthur Strange

 

Pte Arthur Edward Strange, 19791, 7th Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment, was killed in action at Bécordel-Bécourt on September 20th, 1915. He was aged 20.

Rifleman Peter Murdoch

 

Rifleman Peter Murdoch, 2634, D Company, 17th Battalion London Regiment, died on September 27th, 1915, from wounds sustained in action in Flanders.

Pte Albert Hawkes

 

Pte Albert Hawkes, 13777, 2nd Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment, died as a result of wounds received in action on his 30th birthday - September 29th, 1915.

Pte Albert Newbury

 

Pte Albert Newbury, 18360, 2nd Battalion Bed Regt, was killed in action at the Battle of Loos in Flanders on August 25th, 1915. He had been reported missing and it was not until August 1916 that official notification of his death was received. He was aged 24.

 

Pte Herbert Victor Smith, 17938, D Company, 2nd Battalion Beds Regt, was killed in action in the Battle of Loos on September 25th, 1915.

Joseph Walter Wheeler was born in Harefield, Middlesex in 1896.

He was 1 of 5 children born to Herbert & Louisa.

His father was a carter for an asbestos works & died in July 1904 in Harefield, Middlesex, leaving a young family.

Pte George Jenkins

 

Pte George Jenkins, 18252, 2nd Battalion Beds Regt, died on September 30th, 1915, from wounds sustained two days earlier in the Battle of Loos. Some military records suggest he resided in Stopsley, but Press reports at the time described him as from Hockliffe.

Ernest Wright was born in Luton in October 1894.

A Smith served in the Queens (Royal West Surrey) Regiment & Labour Corps.

He died on 19th November 1917 & is buried in the cemetery on Crawley Green Road.

Arthur was the son of Walter & Mary Jane of 36 Bailey Street, Luton.

He served in the Bedfordshire Regiment at Depot.

He survived the war but died on 25th February 1917.

He is buried in the cemetery on Crawley Green Road.

Cpl George Brown

 

Cpl George Brown, 9592, 2nd Bedfords, was killed in action in Flanders on October 7th, 1915. He was the 26-year-old son of George and Elizabeth Brown, of 65 Albert Road, Luton.

Pte George Cox

 

Pte George Cox, 1428, 1/4th Battalion London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers), was killed in action in Flanders on April 27th, 1915. He was aged 27.

Pte John Cox

 

Pte John Cox, 1059, Army Service Corps, died in hospital in Egypt from dysentery on October 8th, 1915, while attached to the 49th Division serving at Gallipoli.

Pte Robert Watson

 

Pte Robert Watson, 9652, King's Company, 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards, died on October 12th, 1915, from wounds sustained in action in France on September 29th. A piece of shrapnel had hit him in the back.

Pte Ernest White

 

Pte Ernest White, 20201, 23rd Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps, was killed in action in France on September 26th, 1915. He was aged 28 and lived at 109 Highbury Road, Luton.

Pte George Hutchings

 

Pte George Hutchings, 4229, 1/5th Beds Regt, was killed in action on August 16th, 1915, aged 20, The son of William and Sarah Hutchings, of Canning Street, Bedford, he had come to the Luton area to be engaged on harvesting work at Eaton Green in 1914.

Pte Charles Few

 

Pte Charles Whelpton Few, 1889, 1/1st Eastern Mounted Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps, died on October 19th, 1915, from dysentery while on board ship in the Mediterranean.

 

Father-of-ten Pte Herbert John Clarke, 3/8664, 2nd Bedfords, was killed in action at Loos in France on September 27th*, 1915. He was aged 39 and a labourer at White Hill Farm, Stopsley.

Pte Charles Carter

 

Pte Charles Carter, 142, East Anglian Division Cyclist Corps, died of dysentery on October 14th, 1915, while returning from Gallipoli on board the hospital ship HMHS Assaye.

Hedley Angel was the youngest son of Arthur Thomas & Lizzie.

In 1911 he is living with his family at 168 Park Street. His father is 36 years old & working as a bricklayer, mother Lizzie is 37 & Bert is a 14 year old office boy whilst 12 year old Hedley is at school.

Arthur Walter Aylott was born in September 1897 to Bransom Aylott & Elizabeth (ne Cook). He had an older sister Lily who was also born in Luton, in 1890.

Charles Thomson Carl Barnard was born in Luton in October 1896.

In 1911 he is 14 years old & living with his family at 203 Castle Street.

Stanley Bell was born in Barton le Clay on 22 April 1887.

He married Hephzibah Powell on 11th May 1904 at St Matthews Church.

Sapper George Stanbridge

 

Sapper George Thomas Stanbridge, 1480, 1/3rd East Anglian Field Company, Royal Engineers, died of dysentery in hospital in Alexandria, Egypt, on October 19th, 1915. He had gone out to Gallipoli in August at the same time as the 1/5th Bedfords.

Fred Brooks was born in Dunstable in 1890. He was 1 of 13 children born to Albert & Emma.

John Brooks was born in 1884 in Dunstable, 1 of 13 children born to Albert & Emma.
